Have you heard the big news?

2 Apr 2021 12:09 PM | Esther M. Hermida

This was the email that was sent to all certified court interpreters in CA on 4/01/2021.
Feel free to share with all translators and interpreters everywhere.

Dear fellow language professional,

From the impact of the current pandemic, to legislation that threatens the way we work, to new technologies that disrupt our profession, it’s no secret that we are facing major challenges. What is worse, they seem to be converging at a critical moment to undermine the best-practices and quality language access that we have worked so hard to develop. It is time for us to raise our collective voice as a profession in the face of these issues. To that end, we are pleased to present the American Alliance of Professional Translators and Interpreters (AAPTI).

AAPTI was established by seasoned translators and interpreters from California, working together with the mission of representing the interests of spoken, written, and sign language T&I professionals, of all sectors, so that we can be heard on the issues that impact us. One such issue was California law AB5, from which our directors helped obtain an exemption under AB2257. Another is federal bill the PRO Act, which threatens the ability of all T&I professionals in the US to remain independent contractors. This bill recently passed the House of Representatives and is currently in the Senate. Translators and interpreters everywhere URGENTLY need your help to make sure it doesn’t pass in its current form.

What can you do to help?

1.    Join AAPTI. By joining us, you become part of a professional alliance that advocates for professional translators and interpreters and the language access they provide. In addition to member benefits, your membership dues also go towards our advocacy activities through a registered lobbyist at the state and national level

2.    Donate to our advocacy campaign through the “give” link on our website

3.    Become a founding member or sponsor of our mission-driven professional alliance

4.    Join our advocacy efforts under the guidance of our Legislative Chair, who will provide legislative outreach guidance when needed from our members to complement the work of our registered lobbyist

5.    Spread the word about AAPTI. The more we raise our voices in a unified front, the more effective we will be

Thank you so much for your hard work and kind support. Please reach out if you would like to join us in this historic effort to be a united front against the issues that impact our profession.

Together we can do so much more!
